I am confident they have done their due diligence. And there is no shame in trading that pick with Deng and not signing two max guys this offseason. The goal is to be able to re-sign Randle and have the money to be able to sign two more max guys either this offseason or next. Losing Deng gets us to that goal. Can't we just stretch Dung's contract? Stretching Deng's contract gives us enough money to sign LeBron and George by itself. But trading Deng's contract would free up enough money to resign Randle as well.

Lebron tends to take a while (and hold the NBA hostage in doing so) when in free agency. Hopefully he chooses quickly because we’re on the clock with Randle.

We're only on the clock if another team chooses to submit an offer.....and there is risk in doing that because the Lakers can wait three days before deciding to match and during that window the team that bid on Randle has their cap space tied up. It's basically a small game of chicken. If the Lakers can convince the league that they're definitely going to match whatever offer is thrown Randle's way then they may not have to be on the clock. Also, as I understand it, July 1 begins free agency, but nothing can be official until July 6. That means that no official offers can be made on Randle until July 6. In essence, the Lakers will have from July 1 to July 9 (8 days) to convince Lebron and George to team up in LA. That should be enough time, theoretically, to know if they are coming or not. But if nobody bids on Randle, then we have all the time in the world.
